Water softening

Water softeners that stop scale before it starts

Hard water leaves scale in boilers, heat exchangers and pipes, wasting fuel and shortening the life of equipment. A softener removes the hardness before it gets there.

Overview

What it is

A softener passes water through a bed of ion-exchange resin, which swaps the calcium and magnesium that cause hardness for sodium. The water that comes out doesn't form scale.

When the resin is exhausted it's regenerated with brine and goes back into service. We size the softener and its regeneration cycle for your hardness and daily use, with manual, semi-automatic or automatic controls.

The treatment train

How a softener works

  1. Filtration

Where needed, a filter ahead of the softener removes solids that would foul the resin.

  2. Ion exchange

Resin in the softener vessel exchanges hardness for sodium.

  3. Regeneration

Brine washes the resin to restore it, on a timer or after a set volume.

  4. Monitoring

Hardness checks confirm the softened water is on target.

Questions

What buyers ask us

How often does a softener need regenerating?

It depends on how hard your water is and how much you use. We set the cycle when we size the softener, and automatic units regenerate on their own.

Is softened water safe to drink?

Softening adds a little sodium. For drinking water, RO is usually the better choice; softeners are mainly for protecting equipment.
