Seawater desalination

Desalination plants that make seawater usable

Where fresh water is scarce, the sea is a reliable source. Our desalination plants use seawater reverse osmosis to turn seawater or brackish water into water for drinking and industry.

Overview

What it is

Seawater carries far more dissolved salt than borewell or municipal water, so a desalination plant runs at much higher pressure and needs careful pre-treatment to handle silt, algae and marine growth.

Energy is the largest running cost. We design plants with energy recovery where it makes sense, and size the plant so it runs efficiently for your demand.

The treatment train

Inside a desalination plant

  1. Intake and screening

Seawater is drawn from a beach well or an open intake and screened to remove debris.

  2. Pre-treatment

Filtration, and ultrafiltration where needed, removes silt, algae and suspended solids.

  3. High-pressure RO

Seawater membranes separate fresh water from brine, with energy recovery to cut power use.

  4. Post-treatment

Remineralisation and disinfection make the water fit for drinking or process use.

Questions

What buyers ask us

What's the difference between seawater and brackish water RO?

Brackish water has much less salt than seawater, so brackish RO runs at lower pressure and costs less to operate. We design for whichever your source is.

What happens to the brine?

The concentrated brine has to be discharged responsibly, usually back to the sea through a diffuser, within the limits set for your site. We plan the discharge as part of the design.
